Our family’s outdoor palapa in Santa Clarita Valley is a tropical haven inspired by my uncle’s worldwide travels, bringing an island vibe to our backyard. This open-sided, thatched-roof retreat, surrounded by lush tropical plants like mango, papaya, and citrus, blends a modern aesthetic with vibrant greenery. We built it ourselves, pouring our hearts and resources into every detail—cutting each piece to size with saws and jigsaws, securing with deck screws and a nail gun, then sanding and painting to perfection. Check out the photos to see our tropical modern creation come to life!
Despite Santa Clarita’s windy climate, where falling trees can be a concern, we budget for careful maintenance to keep our palapa safe and inviting. This family project is a testament to our love for creating sustainable, joyful spaces. Want to see more of our backyard oasis? Fill out our contact form to explore photos of our palapa and garden!
